Alrighty... so I've been playing SL for a bit over a week now...

I'll say right from the beginning that it's definitely not for everyone. There's also one major aspect of it that, if not obtained, will leave the game uninteresting and boring to the player.

Just as in any game with no clear objective, the player has to provide their own reason for playing, which is not always easy. It usually can be summarized into four categories:
-Forging relationships (friendships, or other positive relations) with other players
-Exploration of exotic places, or simulations of places you'd not really be able to visit otherwise
-Marketing, whether it is to buy or sell
-Building, however this does require some skill with 3D modelling

The game has its positive points...
-Provided you have a place to build and the skill required, you can make just about anything
-You are not limited to one map/server... and the only true limitation lies in the boundary between PG/Mature maps and 'Adult Only' maps. However, although this isn't always the case, 'Adult Only' maps are likely more unsavoury places to visit; I can't say for sure, since I've never been to one.
-Friendships, as with the same relations in the real world, could span a lifetime
-Avatars themselves can be easily changed to be no longer human. Normally they're all human shaped, but many things are possible

Then the game has its negative points...
-Many aspects of the game, particularly the marketing, requires a considerable amount of the game currency, which, if you're just starting out, is very difficult to get
-In the beginning, getting used to the interface (and the game in general) takes a while, since it's overwhelming; I'd say the game has a slightly steep learning curve
-Building, if you have no prior experience with 3D building software, takes a while to learn
-As there are good people, there are also bad people. One must take care in where they go, but more importantly who they meet

Like reality, virtual reality possesses many of the same aspects, after all, both are filled by the same people

It's just a matter of balancing the positive and negative to have an enjoyable experience.
